Reviews - The Sound of Music Drag Show

Yes folks its true. The hills are alive with the sound of the best drag show Melbourne has seen this century. Alright, forget the hype and just go along OK? This is drag like you’ve never seen it before. Forget Britney clones and Big Hair and think exploding chickens, curtains that become costumes and lots of fart jokes. The Sound of Music Pink style is the funniest and most cleverly staged drag show we’ve seen here in Melbourne for years. If this is the future of drag then bring it on.

Sound of Music is the brainchild of the Showbags, long time drag survivors and current TV stars on Thursdays with their Drags Aloud show. The Bags have always led the charge with strange costumes and stranger takes on what a drag show can do (manamamana!) but this time they’ve managed to twist a classic film so severely the Von Trapp family may never recover.

The countess is a lesbian, the daughter is a slut, the son wants a sex change, the father farts all the time and there’s some kinky bdsm happening in the discipline department too. Talk about dysfunctional families. Who’d ever think Fraulein Maria would get them all to Eurovision?

The girls at Pink have turned it all around and made the Newmarket into a sort of theatre, cabaret and club all rolled into one. The show is in two parts and they’re promoting table bookings. For a drag show! They’ve also arranged a deal with a restaurant around the corner for discount meals before the show and they’ve worked out a weekend package and show deal with the Saville Hotel. Did I mention the future of drag?

Josh Dare.
